When is the first official day of winter? — December 22nd, January 1st, the first snow fall? This past week we just received our first big snow of the season, reminding all that winter is here. I always feel the first big snow storm marks winter’s arrival. If you live in a place where winters are bitterly cold and unforgiving, then perhaps you too feel winter has truly started when snow falls from the sky. This blizzard was the kind that shut everything down. It hit the streets, covered cars, and blinded people who dared to go outside. So what to do when it snows? My favorite thing is to cook. I love making a slow, warm meal, like a big pot of soup or homey baked goods — something that lazily takes all day, warms the kitchen and perfumes the house. A hot kitchen is a very good thing during cold winter days. When it comes to chilly days, there’s nothing I like more than a sipping on a warm drink. That’s why today I’m sharing with you my Warm Triple Citrus Detox Cider!
This is not your average sweet apple cider. This is an apple cider vinegar based drink. This is the beverage you have when you wake up with a sore or dry throat, or when you didn’t get enough sleep, or when you’re looking to brighten and boost your day. This cider is filled with all things good for you: apple cider vinegar, honey, turmeric, three citruses— grapefruit, orange, and lemon. That’s it! It sounds a little weird, but trust me when I tell you it’s delicious and soothing.
This is the easiest drink. It takes 5 minutes to make and all you are doing is warming the ingredients together. What I love most is that’s packed with vitamins and immunity boosting properties. The lemon, grapefruit and orange are all packed with vitamin C and antioxidants. Turmeric is filled with anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants! Apple cider vinegar has a tons of benefits and uses, like not only boosting energy and helping maintain blood sugar levels, but also disinfecting surfaces for cleaning and helping treat dandruff!. Honey, well not only does it taste good but it also has anti-microbial properties, so it’s great for soothing a sore throat.
Like all my other recipes, this recipe is totally adaptable! So add as much or as little of anything you like. If you wanted, you could use all the citruses! Or just one. If you don’t like apple cider vinegar, you could also use regular apple cider. Turmeric is wonderfully earthy and slightly bitter and works beautifully with citrus! You could also add some ginger to this recipe or cinnamon. It’s all up to you, but what I would recommend is you try this! Any morning I need a boost, I make this cider, and especially as the days get colder and we enter peak citrus season, this becomes a staple in my kitchen!
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do. It takes about 5 minutes to whip up and is the perfect drink for when you need a boost! Make it any time of the day, or in the morning before work, place it in a jar and warm it up later for a refreshing, soothing, and delicious afternoon drink. Enjoy!
